What is the role and value of charitable federations such as Community Health Charities?
Federations serve as a single point of contact, enhancing campaign efficiency and effectiveness. A federation ensures that employees are offered charitable giving choices that meet the highest accountability standards. The major federations focus on issues relating to health, neighborhood programs, environment, social justice, and international disaster relief.
Federations reduce the number of calls to an employer seeking access to a campaign. They also offer resources to make the campaign more effective including experienced and trained staff, access to best practices, training for campaign volunteers and a link to volunteer opportunities. The efficiency a federation brings to its members ensures that donor dollars go for the mission, not for expenses related to trying to open up workplace giving campaigns.
What services does Community Health Charities of Kentucky provide?
CHC can provide companies with a full range of campaign management services: strategic campaign planning; campaign implementation; facilitating charities involvement in campaign events; and managing the fiscal administration and distribution of funds. In addition, we assist companies interested in unifying their campaigns nationally. All of these services are offered to your company free of charge.
CHC of Kentucky is an affiliate of the national organization: Community Health Charities, which provides many of the same or similar services on a national level. There are additional "value added services" CHC is able to provide to develop a year-round relationship and most importantly educate your employee base on promoting good health habits.
What are your overhead costs?
Community Health Charities of Kentucky is proud of our low fund raising and administrative costs: 15%. Our audit, IRS 990 and annual report are available online or by calling CHC at 502-261-8327.
What if our employees already give independently?
While personal giving is admirable, payroll deduction (PRD) is more effective. A payroll deduction gift is generally 4-6 times higher than a one-time cash contribution, and allows contributors to give conveniently, spreading their gift throughout the year. This is truly an employee benefit. It also enhances an employer's stature in the charitable community as the employer is recognized for an aggregate gift of their participating employee base. Our agencies are looking more and more to rely upon payroll deduction.
Does it cost anything for an employer to conduct a Community Health Charities campaign?
CHC can provide the necessary materials at no cost to the employer or work with the employer to design specific materials. Aside from the payroll department taking the time to make the necessary employee deductions, there should be no additional cost to what the employer may already be providing for your campaign. CHC handles the distribution of funds to its individual member agencies, allowing you to track all donations in just one line item.
Is there flexibility in how a campaign is run?
We can meet an employer's needs in almost any instance. Our goal is to accommodate your needs for the benefit of you and your employees and the agencies we serve.
Can we expand our current United Way campaign to include other federations or charitable partners? Why should we do this?
Yes, many companies are responding to their employee's wishes for more charitable choice than the local welfare and social service agencies currently offered. CHC is a natural supplement, with our main focus on health research, health advocacy and education or patient services.
Is organizing an expanded/combined campaign easy?
Yes, Community Health Charities of Kentucky (CHC) provides companies with the resources to smoothly transition to the combined campaign model. Expanded campaigns can be run either by simply listing CHC in existing campaign brochures and pledge forms, or distributing the federation's materials separately. In terms of deductions, your payroll office would continue to make deductions as they normally do (if already conducting a drive). With careful planning and execution, using the tools CHC offers and working with us, implementing a combined campaign can bring about great results, including increased employee participation and fundraising.
How are donations distributed?
CHC encourages donors to designate their gift to the specific health charity(s) of their choice. Designations are always honored. All undesignated funds (funds designated to Community Health Charities but not a specific member agency) are also distributed to our member agencies in the same ratio that employees designated their gifts. Simply put, we have an allocation committee of one – you, the donor. You decide where your money is best spent, not a group of people.
